NellyVille

I’ve never really spent much time in St. Louis before.  I’m pretty sure my grandparents drove us through here on a family vacation once, but I don’t remember anything about it.

Pretty cool to wake up this morning and see the Arch right outside my hotel window.  Today, I’m hoping to go to the top.

Interestingly enough, 3 days ago 100,000 people were right across the street from my hotel, watching some guy give a speech.

The Arch is totally in the tank for Obama.

Lead for the City Conference

I’m at the office, taking care of a few last minute details before Sarah and I head out to St. Louis to theActs29 Lead For the City Conference.

I’m excited because I think that this is going to be a different experience altogether from other conferences I’ve been to, at Willow Creek in Chicago or Northpoint in Hotlanta.  In the last few weeks leading up to it, I’m getting the feeling that it will be like the difference between David Blaine and David Copperfield.  Both are definately magic and both are equally exciting, but they come to it with totally different approaches.  I’ll let you figure out which is which.

Mostly, I’m hoping to hear some new ideas and to be around other church planters who are wrestling with what it means to grow a church’s heart for the city that surrounds it.

BTW, I’m also excited about the Arch.  Never been.

just read

I just finished my friend Bryan’s new book called Gentle Interventions: God’s Graceful Work in Our Lives.

In the short book, he deals with a big topic: God’s grace.  The book is important for Christians because it mostly takes John Wesley’s ideas about grace and puts them in a modern context that is easy to understand.

If you want a copy of the book, contact The Orchard in Tupelo.

fireproof

Last night, our small group went to see Fireproof here in Oxford.  First, a little background: Fireproof is a family drama, made in rural Georgia by two brothers who are evangelist ministers.  It teaches that God is the best marriage counselor, and it is made with Christian audiences in mind.

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous before going in the movie.  Us Christians have done some amazing things – helped communities, advocated against injustice and poverty, even saved civilizations – but lately our artistic endeavors have been hit or miss. (more…)

a dog drinking water in slow motion

I had no idea this could be so fascinating. The dog creates a spoon with the underside of its tongue.
